KID´S BOOK RANT: Merle the Squirrel and the Oak Tree Address

Book Title: Merle the Squirrel and the Oak Tree Address

Author: Katelyn Faith

R A N T

Is it uncouth to rant about a book you wrote? I hardly even think about this (HERE) as a book, because frankly, it was just a poem to me once upon a time. A poem I wrote as an inside joke for my brother and dad. If you want to hear more about that process of production check out the 2 podcast episodes dedicated to Merle HERE and HERE.

You know how you never really know how your house smells on a normal day? But after coming back from a trip, for like 2 seconds you’re like “hmmmm, that’s interesting.”

Well, same with this book. There are aspects I can’t rant about yet, because I can’t smell it.  Like there might be an odd meter in some areas, but if it’s odd I can’t tell because I know how it is meant to be read!  Now that there are people reading the book, they had better start complaining and ranting accordingly, maybe I can start to “smell it myself” better.

But for now, here are the issues I have with what I wrote, because I REALLY should have fact checked this book.

How were the squirrels supposed to know the badger was dangerous?

Is the subliminal message in this ridiculous book that we SHOULDN’T help strangers in need?

Oak trees have addresses?

Animals can talk?

Animals get stuck in soft areas?

Badgers carry acorns around?

Do squirrels eat acorns?

Do badgers and squirrels normally have some type of symbiotic relationship?

Were the consequences to helping the badger too bad?

What is the moral supposed to be?

Wanting a reward is wrong?

Why is there crowns in that one picture?

Frankly, for me, the book is tedious to read. After writing and editing it, the last thing I want to do is read it to my kids. (If you too are bored of this already, here is a free audio version HERE.) And if you haven’t read it yet, you should. If only to rant about it yourself!
